Heard Museum in McKinney, Texas
Through the Conservation Trust and the Heard Museum, IWRC
has
established a temporary emergency shelter for raptors at the
Heard
Museum in McKinney, Texas. The Heard Museum can accommodate
up to 175
birds of prey. If you are in need of emergency shelter for
captive or
wild birds of prey, please contact Lee Theisen-Watt at 972-712-9606
or
972-658-0213. We would like to express our gratitude to John
Ernst, the
museum's director.
Rebecca McKeever (Lone Star Wildlife Rescue, Bellville,
TX):
Rebecca has worked with government agencies to facilitate
the transfer of wildlife to Texas from Louisiana. She has
completed the paperwork and is presently the only rehabilitator
to hold the required permit, but is in contact with larger
groups in her area regarding transfer, placement and legalities.
Caveats: Texas rehabilitators are required to work with the
Texas Animals Health Commission and other agencies; USFWS
will work on a case-by-case basis with birds.
Note that all wildlife from Louisiana must be kept separate
from Texas wildlife; all Louisiana wildlife must be returned
to Louisiana for release. Rabies vector species and deer (CWD)
may not be transported to Texas.
