Red Fox
(vulpes vulpes)

Quick Facts

In the summer, foxes will eat corn, berries, acorns, and grasses.

Fox moms can have up to 10 kits in one litter.

The Red Fox can hear the underground digging, gnawing and rustling of its prey.

Foxes are called the "cat-like dogs."

At seven months of age young foxes are living on their own.

Foxes are mostly nocturnal.

Foxes can bark, yap, howl, and screech.

When adult foxes bring food for the kits they will chortle, "wuk...wuk...wuk" at the entrance of the den.

The Red Fox is a member of the canid (KAY-nid) family.  There are 35 species (SPE-seez) of foxes, wolves, jackals, and other wild dogs.

Red FoxThis fox usually has reddish fur on its back and sides, with a white belly and chest.  The legs are black and the tail has a white tip.  Red Foxes are about 38-41 cm (15-16 inches) tall and weigh about 3-7 kg (7-15 pounds).

You can find the Red Fox all over North and Central America, Europe, northern Asia, and even parts of Australia.  They like to live in wooded areas and brushlands.  Adult foxes usually live alone except when they are raising kits.

Foxes eat many different kinds of food, including mice and other small mammals, birds, insects, fruits, and even grasses.
