Fowl-like or chickenlike birds are really called "Galliformes". Throughout the world, there are 7 families and 256 species of fowl-like birds. Galliformes have a lot of things in common. They all have short beaks, short, rounded wings, strong legs and four toes. Their legs are often armed with spurs, and their toes have hard nails so that they can scratch the ground for food. They can fly in swift, short bursts and they can run well, but they can't swim. The chicken, a member of the pheasant family, is a galliformes, as is the turkey.

There seem to be a lot of fowl-like birds, and they include: megapodes, guans, chachalacas, curassows, pheasant, peafowl, guinea fowl, jungle fowl, turkeys, quails, partridges, ptarmigans, prairie chickens, grouse and hoatzin.
