Amphibians are vertebrate animals - they have backbones just like reptiles, mammals and birds. Like reptiles and birds, they lay eggs,  however they lay them in water.  When the eggs hatch,  the young have gills which allow them to breathe underwater.  As they develop,  the gills are replaced with lungs.  Too cool!
